Overall Thoughts:
The LG 34UC89G-B is an amazing ultrawide gaming monitor with high end specs! I bought this on sale for $700 and it can usually cost anywhere from $800-$1000 depending on the sale. It has a 34inch curved screen with an IPS panel and a resolution of 2560x1080, an aspect ratio of 21.9 with 144hz refresh rate which can also be overclocked to 166hz, 5ms response time, and it also has the g-sync technology which helps eliminate screen tearing for a faster and smoother gamelplay. Ultrawide gaming monitors have become popular and the LG is very impressive with high end specs. So, is it worth $700 dollars and should you buy it? Let’s find out.
So, one area where the LG 34UC89G-B shines is productivity. On the screen I have 2 browsers open, OBS, EVGA precision, and a notepad. So, you have a lot of room where you can get work done and have applications and other stuff open which is nice and feels organized. You can also do a split screen and picture in picture but its not in the menu options and you have to download LG’s OnScreen Control utility and you can choose the option from there to do split screen PIP. Video editing is another area where it shines because the timeline is stretched out and its easy to navigate through the options and if you do video editing then you will really enjoy this in my opinion. When it comes to image quality, the colors on this monitor looks great and this is because it has an IPS panel which produces great color reproduction and color accuracy and colors stay consistent if you look at from the side. However, the 1080 resolution does stand out and it look a bit pixelated. When you’re cruising the web, opening emails and reading the text, it just doesn’t look too sharp and also if you’re really into photo editing, then you might not be impressed.
Gaming on this monitor is absolutely incredible! I do wanna mention that not all games support an aspect ratio of 21.9 so it will display it as a 16.9 aspect ratio but majority of modern games do support it. So with this monitor, you’re getting 144hz refresh rate which can be overclocked to 166hz and you wanna make sure to use a display port cable to achieve that, 5ms response time, and the g-sync technology and with all of that combined, it create such an amazing gaming experience and the 34inch curved screen covers more area in a game which creates a competitive edge over the competition. When you add the high end specs on top of that, it creates such a smooth gameplay with no screen tearing or stuttering and if you’re coming from a 60hz monitor, you will be blown away with the performance. Now the 1080p doesn’t look too bad when it comes to gaming, but it also depends on the game. For example, for faster first-person shooter games, it’s not that noticeable but for games such as assassin’s creed and tomb raider, it doesn’t look the best when it comes to scene with nature such as trees, oceans etc. As far as hardware requirements, I would recommend at GTX 1080ti or 1080 and the cutoff would be a 1070 but you might have to lower the settings a bit.
Now in my opinion, this monitor should of had a higher resolution especially when you look at monitors such as the Acer X34 and the Asus PG348Q which both have a resolution of 3440x1440 exactly what this monitor should of had. Now those monitors have 100hz refresh rate so that is one drawback. So there’s not much to complain about because even though it doesn’t have a higher resolution, it really does make up in a lot of other areas such as a 34inch curved IPS screen with 166hz, 5ms response time and g-sync all for $700.Now if you want a ultrawide gaming monitor with the same specs except a higher resolution then there are monitors coming out such as the Acer X35 and the Asus PG35VQ which have the same specs except you get a 35inch screen with 200hz and a resolution of 3440x1440, HDR, as well as the quantum dot technology. The only catch is that they will be at least $1500 - $2000, maybe even high which is really expensive but in return you’re getting the absolute best gaming monitor
Overall the LG 34UC89G-B is a fantastic gaming monitor with high end specs and an amazing 34inch curved IPS screen. Gaming and productivity really shines on this monitor and is absolutely incredible. I would recommend this monitor to anyone who has an NVIDIA graphics card and usually have a lot of applications open all over the screen and looking for an ultrawide gaming monitor and you're fine with the 1080p resolution as well as it’s within your budget, then this would be a fantastic monitor and I think you will really like it.
